How to create LauncherPro icon packs

I’ve just posted a short tutorial and sample Eclipse project for creating your own LauncherPro icon packs. You can view it here:

LauncherPro v0.8.5 released!

LauncherPro v0.8.5 is now available in the Android Market. Before we get onto the change log, here’s some related news:

You can now purchase LauncherPro Plus on the Android Market! This is done through an app called “LauncherPro Plus Unlocker” which unlocks all the Plus features on the free version. You can find it here. Please note that it only works on official LauncherPro releases, modded versions are not supported.

If you purchased LauncherPro Plus on Paypal, you don’t need the new unlocker at all. Your unlock code will continue to work with future versions of LauncherPro. Since the Android Market doesn’t let developers manually add users to an app, it’s not possible to migrate Paypal users to the Android Market, so the only way to get the unlocker is to buy it.

The rewrite is still being worked on, and some of its improvements are finding their way into the current LauncherPro. Today’s release includes important memory savings and scrolling performance improvements. More of the rewrite’s benefits will be added to the current LauncherPro in upcoming releases.

Here’s what’s new in 0.8.5:

For all users:

  • Reduced memory usage. This should reduce memory-related FCs (if you experience any).
  • Improvements to the scrolling performance/smoothness
  • Changed Paypal links to Market links

For Plus users only:

  • New: LauncherPro Widgets are now skinnable! Widget skins are installed as normal Android apps, either through the Android Market or downloading them from 3rd party websites. Once you install some skins, you can apply them by opening LauncherPro and pressing Menu > Preferences > LP Widget Settings, then choose the widget you want to apply the skin to, press “Select Skin” and pick one of your installed skins. After restarting LauncherPro, the widget should have the skin applied. If you would like to make your own skins, please refer to this thread in our forum for more information.
  • Fixed some bugs in the Calendar widget related to daylight savings time.

LauncherPro v0.8.4.1 released

This is a small bugfix update that fixes two bugs introduced in 0.8.4:

  • Fixed force-close when scrolling the app drawer on certain Android 2.1 devices (Droid Eris, Nook Color, etc.)
  • Fixed force-close when trying to update Twitter/Friends widget with empty Twitter login credentials.

LauncherPro v0.8.4 now available!

First things first: This is not the complete rewrite. That one is still in the works. As I’ve mentioned a few times before, it’s a much bigger task than I anticipated so it’s taking a lot more time to finish it. When it’s ready for testing, you’ll be the first to know :)

Now some rather important news (and I know some people will be thrilled to hear this!). The new Android Market terms and conditions don’t allow developers to sell app upgrades outside the Android Market, so that means LauncherPro Plus will soon be available to buy through the Android Market. Unfortunately that also means the Paypal option will have to be removed, so if you want to buy LauncherPro Plus through Paypal, I suggest you do so in the next few days while it’s still available. If you have bought LPP through Paypal, you’ll be able to continue using it and getting updates as usual.

Now for the main news…

LauncherPro v0.8.4 is now available in the Android Market! (Note: I wanted to get this update finished and released weeks ago, but personal life got in the way and I haven’t been able to finish it until now. Sorry for keeping you waiting!)

Here’s what’s new:

For Plus users only:

  • Facebook login (for the Facebook widget) is now handled through the official Facebook app where available. This should help people with low DPI devices who were having throuble logging in before.
  • Updated the Twitter API backend to fix some issues that some people were having with status updates.
  • New Gmail widget! (Side note: Oh boy, this widget has been giving me lots of trouble to code. Since there’s no officially supported Gmail API in Android, there’s pretty much no documentation whatsoever on it). You can choose the source Gmail account, so you if you have multiple Gmail accounts, you can have a widget for each one of them. My intention was to have the widget simply open conversations in the official Gmail app when you click on them, but unfortunately 3rd party apps are not allowed to open that part of the Gmail app directly, so I had to create my own internal viewer to view them. It’s not as full-featured as the official app but it should be enough for most users. Replying to emails is handled by the official Gmail app (we can launch that part of it from 3rd party apps).

For all users:

  • Gingerbread fixes and improvements. The 3D app drawer has been fixed to work properly on Gingerbread. Other tweaks should provide much improved graphics performance (smoothness) on Gingerbread as well.
  • New homescreen transition effects: “Flip” and “Rotate 2″. The old “Flip” effect is now named “Flip 2″. If anybody can come up with better names for these transitions, I’m open to suggestions :-)

That’s it for now!

LauncherPro v0.8.3 released!

First a little update on the progress of the rewrite: We’re still not quite there yet, but still making progress. The rewritten parts already show a marked improvement; for example, the rewritten app drawer scrolls smoother than ever before, even with some upcoming eye candy enabled (*hint, hint* :P ). I know a lot of you are anxious to get your hands on the rewritten version, but I think the wait will be well worth it. I seriously believe it will put LauncherPro on a league of its own since it’s not bound by the limitations of the code in the stock Android launcher.

Now, about the newly released LauncherPro v0.8.3, it brings one new, highly requested feature for all users:

  • Homescreen transition effects – You can now choose different transition effects to be used when moving through homescreens. Currently there are four effects on top of the usual side scrolling: Scale, Rotate, Flip, and Cube. More effects will come in future updates. (Menu > Preferences > Homescreen Settings > Transition effect

LauncherPro v0.8.2 released!

First of all, some news about the full rewrite of LauncherPro: It’s taking longer than I expected, but I’m making steady progress. I’m hoping for a January release, but anything could happen really.

Now about LauncherPro v0.8.2 that is now available on the Android Market. Here’s what’s new:

For all users:

  • New “Virtual looping” on homescreens! A ton of people requested loop scrolling on homescreens. The problem is that would be incompatible with Live Wallapers, and it would make most static wallpapers look weird. So instead I decided to use a different approach. When you try to scroll past the last homescreen, LauncherPro will quickly bounce back to the first. Conversely, if you try to scroll before the first screen, it will bounce you forward to the last screen. This effectively gives you loop scrolling (you can scroll indefinitely in any direction) without incompatibility issues or nasty visual side effects. (Enable in Preferences > Homescreen Settings)

For Plus users only:

  • New dock popup: Recent Apps. Will show you a list of your most recently used apps/tasks, so that you can quickly switch between then.

  • New “Clear cache” option for Twitter and Facebook widgets. In order to reduce disk usage and startup time, you should periodically clear the caches which will remove all stored data (tweets, posts, user photos, etc) from LauncherPro. For the Friends widget, you should clear both caches. (Preferences > LP Widget Settings > Twitter widget/Facebook widget)

That’s it for now.

Facebook Error – Please update to v0.8.1.1

I just made a very, very stupid mistake. When I was trying to register Launcher Pro as an app on Facebook, I kept getting an error that the app couldn’t be registered. After about 10 tries, I managed to successfully register it.

Today I went to edit the settings so that the posts would include “via LauncherPro for Android” instead of “via Launcher Pro” and noticed that all those failed registrations actually went through. So I started deleting them, only to accidentally delete the one that LauncherPro is actually using.

That means that the key that LauncherPro uses to access the Facebook API is no longer valid, so your Facebook/Friends widget will stop updating form Facebook.

I’ll be uploading a quick fix update in a few minutes, but it does mean you’ll have to re-authenticate your Facebook credentials by pressing Menu > Preferences > LauncherPro Widgets > Facebook Widget > Facebook Login .

Edit: The update is now in the Android Market. Please update to version and re-authenticate as stated above to keep your widgets updating normally. You can also download the APK file here.

I’m terribly sorry for the inconvenience and hope you can understand.
